Palynologist
Paleo Research Institute, Inc. is a small business. We work in a home that has been converted into an office and lab and prefer to keep the atmosphere collegial and supportive. The successful candidate will be at home taking on multiple roles within the business. Paleo Research Institute strives to provide the very best analysis and interpretation of the remains that we work with to our clients. This involves commitment to excellence at all levels of work. All positions at Paleo Research Institute are considered research positions, not academic positions.
Pollen (and phytolith) sample extraction and pollen identification and counting will constitute the core of these roles. Some candidates will be more interested than others in interpretation of pollen records and writing reports, so this is a negotiable role. Participation in keeping the office and lab neat and clean is a must for the successful candidate, as is participation in tasks that are requested of you that might seem outside the scope of a scientist. Examples include labeling and storing samples, keeping a running log of samples, administrative paperwork, taking out trash, opening or closing the office, and others.
Abilities outside laboratory extraction and pollen identification are helpful in securing this position. There will be the opportunity to count more samples than you can possibly imagine. Opportunities to learn identification of starches and pollen from other geographic areas also exist.
Qualifications: Master’s Degree (or near completion), including counting your own pollen for your thesis. Must have experience in and demonstrate proficiency in identifying pollen from an area in North America.
Some things to think about if you are interested in applying for this position:
Approximately how many samples have you counted in the time you have been studying palynology?
Have you counted additional samples that were not part of your studies? If so, approximately how many?
What part(s) of the world were these samples from? (Be specific)
How many hours per day would you like to spend at the microscope?
How many samples have you counted in an average day?
How many hours per day would you like to spend standing in the laboratory extracting samples?
What would your ideal day look like?
Where do you need more experience?
What is your favorite activity with regards to palynology?
What is your least favorite activity?
Do you like to give papers or presentations at meetings?
What starting salary are you expecting?
What abilities do you bring to Paleo Research Institute that make you a valuable addition to our professional staff?
Macrofloral Analyst
Paleo Research Institute in Golden, Colorado, is looking for a full-time macrofloral analyst to work on archaeological samples from the New World. We will consider applicants wishing to work at least 75% time for a part-time position.
Education: Masters Degree preferred
Paleo Research Institute provides a variety of archaeobotanic services for archaeologists across the United States and in other areas. The bulk of our work is from North America and includes mainly archaeological feature samples to address questions of subsistence and plant use by prehistoric and historic peoples.
The successful candidate will already have an excellent ability to recognize and identify seeds, charcoal, and other plant remains using a light microscope, and will be able to use our reference collection to identify “unknowns”. We have laptop computers available for entering data while sorting samples.
The successful candidate will have strong interpretation and writing skills, and this function will be part of the job.
People with multiple skills will be considered for their ability to contribute an additional dimension to Paleo Research Institute work. People with strong administrative skills also have the potential to contribute in additional areas.
Paleo Research Institute is a small business with a small business atmosphere. Casual dress is appropriate. Every employee is critical to our success, meaning that we rely upon each individual to do a thorough, complete, and excellent job. Paleo Research Institute examines pollen and phytolith records to address issues of paleoenvironmental reconstruction. We also use archaeoclimatic modeling to compare to proxy records for paleoenvironmental reconstruction. In addition, we examine macrofloral remains, starches, pollen, and phytoliths to reconstruct subsistence and plant use of both prehistoric and historic people. We have recently added an FTIR to assist us in identifying organic remains, including charred items that appear to represent cooked meal, starchy or fruity remains, or parenchymous tissue. We also will be characterizing soils and other items using the FTIR.
