Micromorphology
More recently, petrographic analysis has been applied to the study of site formation processes. This type of analysis, referred to as micromorphology, can be used to identify living floors and sources of sediments. Samples must be stabilized and collected in the field and are prepared using special large microscope slides. The stabilized block is then sent to Paleo Research Institute, where we orchestrate the preparation of the thin-sections and provide the analysis and interpretation.
What Questions can be answered with Micromorphology?
Definition of living floors or surfaces, including identification of multiple surfaces is particularly well suited to being answered with micromorphology. Other questions include identifying the presence or absence of disturbance, for instance, through plowing or tilling for agriculture.
